Before the M4 Severn Bridge was built, there was no road bridge over the Severn river south of Gloucester.  This meant that traffic from South Wales to South West England had to take the A40, the A4 and then a ferry or a motorail crossing at Bristol.

Traffic Wales manages and provides information for the M4 starting at junction 22 and finishing at junction 49 as well as number of major trunk roads throughout Wales.
